Hi,

I was at the South Surrey Recreation Centre, in the Lower Mainland, and there was a small bird that resembled a hummingbird sitting in a small tree near the entrance. It had an unusual call and was dark in color with some red? It was about 3 inches and had a beak like a hummingbird, thin and long. If anyone could throw out a name that would be helpful.

That sounds like an Anna's Hummingbird, they're green with a pinkish throat patch. They're the only hummingbird in our area in the winter. From spring-fall we also have Rufous Hummingbirds, which are orange-ish with a red throat patch.
They're often seen when they're hovering, but they do perch to save energy.
