This paper "Avian Supergenes" by Scott Taylor and Leonardo Campagna that Peter Candido sent me talks about something very interesting that I never knew before reading it.
It explains how the White-morphs of White-throated Sparrows almost always mate with a Tan-morph of the opposite sex. This is how the genetic inversion causing the two morphs is maintained.
