Speaking of nest watching

A family of wood ducks at Reifel have had the earliest babies on record so far! They haveb5 ducklings. The previous record was May 2nd!

I have white-crowned sparrows now nesting in my yard! They pick off nesting material from my palm tree which is cool to see.

I peaked into my nestbox and there are four tiny, tiny baby chickadees inside sleeping soundly .

I so hope this brood is successful.

Thanks Court!! I am hoping the crows do not get this bunch. I took this photo with my phone when the parents left. It's not any good quality but don't want to disturb the little ones.

Aww thanks guys and yes Court they really do look like little hairless aliens with huge mouths! But I still love the floppy little things. I'll try to capture as much of the journey as possible!

My chickadees fledged this morning unfortunately one died before fledging from unknown reasons so I buried him in my flower garden.

So far the 3 little remaining fledglings are doing well and being fed by mom and dad in my apple tree.

Today I noticed that my chickadees were back in their nest box! Hoping for a successful brood this year!

I have chickadees again this year too. I put up a brand new house a month ago and for the last week they've been going in with nest materials. You were mentioning crows getting at them. Does that happen once they leave the nest as fledglings? The bird house I set up doesn't have a perch by the hole and the hole is just big enough for a chickadee to get into. It also has an overhang on it so bigger birds can't look in.
