The Birding in BC web site operates as a not-for-profit online resource. It's financial intent is not to make money or provide an income for it's maintainers, administrators, members, contributors or benefactors. Time and money spent on the web site entirely comes from the contributions of Kevin Slagboom and from members of this web site.

Unfortunately, the cost of running the Birding BC web site is not insignificant.

Currently, hard costs are roughly $400.00 per year. Fees are paid for reserving the domain name, for hosting space, for software/code licensing, and for bandwidth. The trend is that bandwidth usage and hosting space use on average is increasing at a steady rate.

For design, maintenance and administration time, many many hours have gone into building this resource to what it is today. It has been a pleasure working on this web site and supporting others in the birding community and that will continue so long as the financial burden does not become too great.

How rising costs are covered

To offset increasing costs and to plan for the future, Birding BC runs a few income generating programs such as Google Ads and Amazon.ca associate book links that each feed in a trickle of income. To offer a summary, this web site through your activities visiting Google links or through a direct link Amazon.ca purchase generates roughly $0.50 per day. If you do the math, you can see we are still very much in the red...but that's ok.
