Happy World Shorebirds Day to everyone!

Today the world is celebrating shorebirds! Shorebirds are one of the key indicators for climate change. As shorebirds go, we may as well. Already Red Knots and other species are suffering impacts from shorter bill lengths in juveniles to lack of adequate food on their migratory stopovers. So, let’s take a moment today to think about how a Bar-tailed Godwit can fly 7,200 miles from Alaska to New Zealand non-stop in eight days, or how a Wandering Tattler can spend the winter in such widely dispersed wintering grounds around the planet.
We are lucky to have these birds and should never take them for granted.

Cheers,
Mel
