Back on Nov 2nd I was enjoying the view of a downy woodpecker at my peanut feeder, when all of a sudden this large black bird with a red mohawk appeared! Not at the feeder... which is close to my house, but he went and perched on the neighbor's fence for a minute then flew away. I was sooo thrilled to see a Pileated Woodpecker for the first time ever.

Are they common in residential neighborhoods? I'm hoping to see it again!

Not very common to see a Pileated Woodpecker in a residential area unless it's fairly wooded. Congratulations. This is the time of year to be watching for unusual birds in your yard. Birds are losing their natural food sources and much more likely to depend on feeders through the cold, wet months.

I saw one yesterday at Burnaby Lake. He was big and beautiful but it was too dark and he was too far away to even attempt a picture so I just watched and followed him as far as I could.

A PW just paid a visit to the backyard this morning ... not a great photo, hastily taken through the window.

I've seen one in the parking lot at Renfrew Community Centre, which is more or less semi-wooded.
