Jan 12_2018 a Merlin flew out of the bushes, over Dallas Rd, up over the flagpole and into BHPk. Wasn't able to relocate it in the Park but did see one under the cedar enclave beside the Bandstand last year eating prey.

Jan 22_2018-took a walk through Owl territory between rain storms. found Barred Rascal Pete hunting (a loudly chirping robin gave him away), Josie the Mom Barred
was up in the bandstand cedars snoozing, the Bald Eagle flew onto the totem. A soaring Red-tailed Hawk was being chased by seagulls. found an Anna's nest under construction.
Jan 20-saw Barred Mr & Goldie and a Cooper's Hawk hunting on Heywood.

Feb 4_2018 Sunday. a 12 degree day feeling like 9 with cold West winds 39-50km, still toque weather but warm enough for the white Winter Moths to start hatching. saw one flitting about a bush. the birds will love them.
-the first bunch of Daffodils is in full bloom in the little meadow across from Mile 0. (if you're looking to send a photo to your prairie friends.) Cherry trees are out.
-a squirrel was heading up a pine across from Beacon Drive-In with a mouthful of green grasses and leaves, feathering its nest.
-herons have returned to the Park, ready for nest building (usually in March, we'll see if it starts in Feb this year)
-in SEW, Dad Barred Owl was sleeping in his favourite pine tree, sheltered from the wind. spotted the Campfire Barred a couple days ago, a few trees distant from her usual spot, Mom Josie is behind the Bandstand off and on.
-lots of Mallards, Wigeons and a couple pair of Hooded Mergansers on the ponds
-the Bald Eagles are always present either on the totem in SEW or at the nest

Feb22_2018 Thur 11:30am-flock of Snow Geese in V formation just flew over the Cricket Field towards Clover Point. (pure white with black primaries)
3" snow in Beacon Hill Park-kids sliding down the Hill, snowmen, fed the Towhees and Peacocks peanuts. not many other birds and no Owls seen this morning.
Winter Wonderland, a beautiful walk.

March 2_2018 SEW-Mom Barred Josie is pregnant. She has moved from her winter tree under the Bandstand in the Park to the woods, near the nest. She looks all plump and ready to go, sitting in the same roost tree as last year but 2 weeks earlier, as has been our Spring (gauged by the blooming Cherry trees on View St-this year Feb 6th, last year a late Spring.) This will be the 5th year for Mr & Josie to have owlets. Looks like they will use the hole in the broken off douglas fir once again (3rd yr running for that nest location.)
We will watch to see when she lays the eggs; once they are all in the nest she will incubate them together for 28-33 days.
The first Fawn Lily has a bud. The daffodils are blooming on Beacon Hill.

March 6_2018 Tue-found 3 anna's nests where the mom is feeding hatched chicks. One is in SEW right along Lover's Lane at the top of a 20' Ocean Spray bush, the second in the bush by the small daffodil meadow at Mile 0 (waited 8 minutes for her to land), and the third in a skinny alder 15' up at mid Harrison Pond near Holland Point. A huge raccoon was sunning above a guitarist playing the opening rif of Hotel California on Dallas Rd walkway. It was a warm day and everyone was laid back and enjoying it.
Mom Barred Josie is still resting in the cedar in SEW.

Love Hotel California! Great song. Only been to beacon hill park three times but seemed like a great place. Never seen a anna's hummingbird nest before!

Hope you come back to visit Adam! lots of anna's nests happening right now with chicks being fed.

March 7_2018 Wed
-last year's Bald Eagle Juv flew into a douglas fir, right of the totem. he's still all brown. got some good shots from Dallas Rd.
-Barred Mom Josie was still in the cedar. a black grey squirrel was atop the nest hole looking in.
-was following a noisy hummingbird around the back of a log with vines thinking I'd find another nest, but was surprised to come face to face with the GHOW juv. he blinked, I blinked, took some shots and video and left. he didn't move from his spot at about 8 ft. I could have reached out and touched him. good to see he is still in the vicinity.
March 8_2018 Thurs
-SEW-Barred pair Mr & Josie were about 3 feet apart in another cedar today. I think this means mating is going on this week.
-the herons have not started building their nests yet. must be waiting for the sunny weather coming up.
-yellow forsythia bushes are starting to bloom and fawn lilies have buds.
-double decker red buses are loaded with tourists already

Mar 8_2018 Thur- Barred Mr & Mom Josie sitting 3 ft apart in a cedar. looks like mating time.

Mar 10_2018 Sat (3:45pm) Common Redpoll pair in tree west side of Fountain Lake.
SEW-Barred Mr & Josie still near the nest tree, each in a different cedar today.
also saw Barred Goldie snoozing in the sun.
3 yr old Barred Tuffy made another appearance at Central Library, got more press and the Library did up a special Children's display on Owls.
some anna's chicks' beaks are visible when being fed.

March 17_2018 Saturday St Patrick's Day-Great Blue Heron are building nests in earnest today. lots of twigs carried in, females inserting them into the nest and squawking at the males to hurry with more. Fair weather is upon us. 12 degrees today.
The Bald Eagles' nest looks built up and ready to go whenever they are.
See them on the totem and hunting over the ocean.
More Common Redpoll seen in the tree by the main WRs.
anna's nests in SEW and Barred Josie is still sitting in the cedar (not the nest hole).
Red-eared Slider Turtles on the log. a few warblers. lots of American Goldfinch since Dec.

March 21_2018 Wed
3pm the GHOW juv 2017 was in the Park. couldn't miss it with 2 big Ravens and 10 crows all squawking in her tree. she looked pretty frightened. they finally flew away and, when she saw me, so did she (further into the Park).
Barred Mr & Josie hooting to each other in SEW when the ravens came in there talking loudly.
Clover Point had Brant (and a CAT & excavator. construction underway until 2020. the good news is all that muck will no longer go into the ocean but be pumped to the new McLaughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant in Esquimalt.)

April 1_2018 SEW-Barred Mr has moved to his watch tree beside the nest tree. Owl friends said Mom Josie was not in the rest cedar Good Friday March 30, so we believe she is up in the nest laying her eggs. Took a shot of the hole but didn't see her head stick up. It's fairly deep, so she can take total cover.
Last year was a late Spring & she was in the nest hole April 17th (or sooner) and the 3 owlets branched (clawed down the trunk) May 12th. One was on the ground and moved a fair distance, another had climbed up the Maple tree beside the nest, and the third came down later that night. Looking forward to owlets' heads sticking out of the nest hole later this month!

April 3_2018 12:30 pm SEW-Barred Mom Josie hooting back to Barred Mr from the nest! She has been in there 5 days laying eggs and/or incubating them. She is still staying below view. 8 crows buzzed the top of the nest tree for 10 minutes, Mr looking over from the large cedar on Lovers Lane where he is keeping watch.

Heard the Cooper's Hawk pair near the old campfire area, closer to the WR. They will be mating this month too.

Looking for more Anna's nests as they are busy gathering nectar & flies.

Lots of heron in their nests in the Park proper.

April 7_2018 Sat 2:45pm-found GHOW adult in cedar tree in the Park hooting softly to another, probably her Juv. There seems to be an understanding between the Horned & Barred about giving space. The Horned stay in the Park while the Barred are nesting in the SEW, then they switch places in late summer when the Barred take their owlets into the Zoo area and Park.

Out by the totem, the Bald Eagle Juv flew into a douglas fir and the adult onto the totem. a good eagle conversation took place.
Mom Barred is still hunkered down in the nest tree hole.

A few birders in the SEW, one from Duncan who has a leucistic anna's in her backyard. She is sending me that shot.
