The other day at 3pm I hear a real bang so I ran to look for the obvious a bird into a window. Our kitchen window out to the back deck had a small feather stuck on it. So I went to the door just in time to see one of our cats shocked just looking at a very stunned Sharp-shinned Hawk that was lying on the cat house (dog house) under the window. His wings were open and I thought how the heck do I deal with this. So the first thing I did was grab the cat out of the way, move the cat house and just like that it flew over me as I ducked quickly. Yesterday I noticed it back on our birch and it's a juvi.
We have two outdoor cats that came with our house. Very spoiled with two dog houses on the back deck for them. Smokey was just shocked to see what just happened as he chilled the afternoon away. Glad I was home.

Quite an adventure . Is it possible that one of the cats managed to startle or swipe the hawk off course?

Domestic cats are a terrible burden on wild bird populations I hope you will consider changing them to indoor cats. The cats will be happier and healthier, they will provide more enjoyment to you, and you will get to see many more birds.

No way one of our cats could swipe a hawk out of the air. He hit the window and freaked my cat who was chilling on the top of one of there houses.

They were born outside at the crackhouse that was behind us when we moved here seven years ago this month from Mississauga Ontario. I spent the first three or four days trying to chase them away. I was not a cat guy. We called everyone to see what could be done. We finally had Cat Rescue pay for spaying and neutering and they said they'd try to fing good homes. Well it was obvious that the cat problem was huge here and as we started taking care of them we started to fall for them. We payed back the rescue and they have lived outside ever since. For various reasons they must be outside. We have indoor rabbits and a guinea pig upstairs. Three dogs and the smallest our four pound toy poodle is freaked by them. The male still sprays. I'm very allergic to cats. So we give them plenty of attention and pampering and just make the best of a kind of bad situation. I'm really not one who believes cats should be allowed to run free. Lucky enough we're in a rural setting and they seem to prefer voles and mice hunting in fields.
I realy love these two for sure but would most likely never have cats again in the outdoors.
