This is Vancouver's first city bird competition and the birds to choose from are :

• Anna’s Hummingbird

• Black-capped Chickadee

• Varied Thrush

• Pacific Wren

• Pileated Woodpecker

• Northern Flicker.

All info about the contest can be found here:

I would think Rufous Hummingbird would be more appropriate than Anna's as well, but that's just me :)
I have been involved in this a bit and the purpose is to choose a resident year-round bird that represents the city. For example, the bird for 2014 is the Northwestern Crow.

I'm rooting for Anna's Hummingbird :)

Its an interesting contest, I love the Pileated Woodpecker but I do not think there are that many around Vancouver. I believe the Varied Thrush are around for only the winter. The Northern Flicker and the Black-capped Chickadees are very fun to watch. The Anna's Hummingbird is an amazing little bird and is such a pleasure to see. Seeing a brightly colored hummingbird in the winter or the rainy weather is always a treat and would get my vote; if I lived in Vancouver.

I hear Rufous Hummingbird won ABA bird of the year last year.
It's a neat contest and i voted (for Varied Thrush) because when i ask out of towners what birds they really want around here they always say Varied Thrush, or Rufous Hummingbird for some reason.

Varied Thrush was in second last i checked, but Anna's is a fine hummingbird no matter what and would do nicely as bird of the year if indeed it wins.
