 Post subject: Tailless Stellar's Jay

Out of curiosity,,,
I have a Stellar's Jay visiting the yard that has absolutely no tail. Any ideas on causes?

Hi Holly,

At this time of the year the most likely explanation is something probably caught it (cat, raptor etc.) and it was able to get away through loosing the retrices. They could have been pulled out, or lost if the Jay was going through thick brush to get away. An adult prebasic molt would allow the bird to lose some tail feathers while growing the new ones, but it usually happens in sequence and not all at once. Also not the right time of the year
