Hi all,

I went hiking on Hollyburn Mountain last week and I took this blurry shot of a Grey Jay. I realized after I dowlnloaded this picture that this guy had a tag around its leg. As I am pretty new to birding, I was wondering if bird banding on Geay Jays (and others...) was common in the Lower Mainland and how it was organized.

Thank you very much in advance.

I will look into this Gray Jay. Thanks for posting. It will be hard to pinpoint where this one was banded without the band number. I will assume that he was probably banded on Grouse Mt.

Currently we have 3 banding locations within the Lower Mainland. One on Grouse Mt, a station at Colony Farms and a station at Burnaby Lake. Right now as far as banding certain species goes, we band what we catch in our mist nets. The only time we run a seperate banding program for a particular species is going on right now for Northern Saw-whet Owls.

Our banding stations are run by the Vancouver Avian Research Centre. The link to our website is in my signature. We band 2-3 days a week depending on weather. Our banders have to certified to band but anyone is welcome to come out and visit a station if we know ahead of time.
