Seen Jan 27 Beacon Hill Park with Mallards and American Wigeons. Head is like a Redhead but was a dark chocolate brown. Body feathers not like a Redhead.

I believe this is a female Lesser Scaup.
I guess it could also be a Greater Scaup (female) - hard to tell between them sometimes.

Thanks Judy - now you have pointed it out I agree. It is the first time I have seen one in a duck pond and not the ocean.
I like your pics on Flickr as it collects all the commonly seen birds in Victoria in one place and helps someone like me who is new to birding.
